VOLLEYBALL
The DHS Varsity Volleyball team is currently 7-6 this season as they begin their Region play this week. While the first half of the season has been plagued with injuries, the girls have had strong performances from Senior middle blocker Sophia Walker and Junior setter Katy Ross Broadfoot and Junior libero Ellis Grace. Region play kicked off Tuesday, September 14th with Home matches against St. Pius X and Chamblee. With hard-fought wins at the Weber school at the end of August, the DHS Volleyball team looks to finish off September the same way. Senior Night was Wednesday, September 15 against Paideia where we honored our 8 seniors in our program: #2 Zoe Saul, #3 Sophia Walker, #6 Sarah Harper, #7 Ella Hollman, #14 Morgan Miles, #16 Lauren Cox, and #16 Makayla Nathaniel who also serves as our team manager. Special thanks to all of our parents, coaches, and fans who have supported us so far.
CROSS COUNTRY
On Saturday, September 11, Decatur Cross Country traveled to Carrollton to run in the enormous invitational meet held there each year. The best teams in Georgia gathered to get a preview of the state course, and so DHS XC went head-to-head with many of their rivals. Happily, we performed very well! For this meet, the boys and girls teams were each split into three: Championship, Varsity, and JV.
The boy's Championship and Varsity teams both took first place in their divisions! Christian Gonzalez and Billy Carlton led the Championship division, taking 2nd and 8th places, respectively. The other scorers for DHS in that race were Daniel Blaich, Jake Westing, and Reed Siegler. The Varsity boys won their race by sticking together in a pack, with the top 5 runners (Sam Corso, Zak Abdulahi, Abe Werner, Ethan Johnston, and Noah Ellis) all finishing within a minute of each other. The boy's JV team (led by Fredy Pastrana and Abraham Kibret) didn't finish quite as high in their race, but they all turned in excellent performances.
The girl's teams were smaller but still impressive. Gabby Malerba led the championship top 5 by finishing in 8th place overall. She was closely followed by Anna Blaich, Grace Osborn, Sophie D'Elena, and Penelope Goebel. In the girl's varsity race, Kate Sherwood and Jessie Montgomery led that squad while the JV runners were headed up by Anna Grace Anderson and Asha Master.
Once again, we are proud of our harriers and looking forward to many more excellent races.
