Oakhurst Elementary Named Natl. Blue Ribbon School
On September 21, 2021, U.S. Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, recognized 325 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2021. Oakhurst Elementary School was included in that number for its overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
Oakhurst Principal, Tanisha Frazier said, "Being named a National Blue Ribbon school by Secretary Cardona and the Department of Education is significant. It shows that we are amongst the top-performing schools in the nation for academic achievement. That's a big deal! Our students, staff, and the entire community have worked so hard for years. We will continue this work for years to come."
According to the press release issued by the U.S. Department of Education, “The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.”
The Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates:
Exemplary High-Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.
Oakhurst was recognized in the Exemplary High-Performing Schools category. Principal, Tanisha Frazier, and Ms.Aldridge will travel to Washington D.C. in November for the official ceremony.
