Gyimah Whitaker, Ed.D., began her tenure as superintendent of the City Schools of Decatur (CSD) on July 1, 2023. With over two decades of leadership experience, Dr. Whitaker served as deputy chief academic officer for Fulton County Schools, overseeing a $48M general fund, $61M in federal funds, and $47M in ESSR funds. She also held leadership roles in Atlanta Public Schools, including area superintendent and executive director.

Dr. Whitaker is accomplished in developing instructional programs, diversity initiatives, community engagement, and managing budgets. Her leadership philosophy centers on the belief that leadership matters, engagement inspires, and equity drives excellence.

As CSD superintendent, Dr. Whitaker focuses on improving student outcomes through high-quality literacy instruction, advancing racial equity, accelerating student learning, and fostering a positive culture. She is committed to engaging all stakeholders to strengthen the district.

Dr. Whitaker earned a B.A. in African American Studies and an M.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Georgia State University. A native of West Philadelphia, she is a proud wife and the mother of two children.
