Phase 3 Budget and Design Concept
Our envisioning and planning processes are ongoing. We have partnered with a team of architects from Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood (GMC) to help us bring the promise of the Early Childhood Learning Center to life. Our GMC team partners guided a large group of stakeholders, including parents, local elected officials, DHS architecture students, and members of local interest groups, through an envisioning exercise that produced new and collaborative ideas for the eventual design of the Early Childhood Learning Center.

During the BOE community meeting on April 22, 2026, CSD shared two new proposed redesigns of the new ECLC. The new designs were in response to the board's April 14, 2026, directive to the administration to reevaluate the current building design for the new ECLC to identify cost-saving measures, possibly reducing the building's square footage. The board remains committed to balancing the need to provide early childhood learning with fiscal responsibility, local history, and community input. The community is invited to review and share feedback about redesigned options 1 and 2.
Option 1 eliminates the office space intended to replace two district-owned homes previously utilized as offices, which the district plans to sell. Additionally, this design removes seven parking spaces and is projected to cost approximately $22.42 million, which includes expenses for redesign and permitting.
Option 2, referred to by the district as "aggressive cuts," eliminates Pre-K spaces, community amenities, indoor play areas, and conference rooms. This option is expected to cost around $21.26 million while maintaining 36.5 percent contiguous green space.
