DHS boasts an extra tradition for this occasion - the creation of floats for the homecoming parade. Each class (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior) competes to construct a float, showcasing their collaborative skills, creativity, and class-specific colors. The themes are designated by the school and the Student Government Association (SGA). With input from their peers, each class operates within a set budget, building an awe-inspiring display to show off in the Homecoming Parade.

At DHS, the community's parents play an integral role in orchestrating this event. Chaperones supervise the construction phase for safety. Parents contribute by furnishing tools, snacks, and donated materials for the class to use during their building sessions. Build times occur during the week before the parade, on  Monday-Thursday nights. Students gather at a classmate's residence (host home) to construct the float. On the day of the parade, the floats travel from the building site to downtown Decatur for a community parade. Floats are judged and scored and the winning class is declared. After the parade, our school community heads to the football stadium to cheer on our football team. Go Bulldogs! 

Your support and encouragement to your students to participate in these Homecoming events is appreciated. 

In the next few weeks, communication will be sent out for volunteer sign-ups. Parent volunteers will be needed for ALL aspects of the DHS Homecoming celebrations including the following: 

• Homecoming Dance- decorating and cleanup crew, chaperones, and snack donations
• Float Building- STUDENT participation, chaperones, snacks, tools, host homes
• Parade- COMMUNITY participation, drivers, and clean-up crew (disassembling the float)
• Homecoming Game- STUDENT and COMMUNITY participation to cheer on DHS Football
