I was born in Miami, Florida. Both my parents, Drs. Carmen and Anthony Shershin, are professors of mathematics at Florida International University. I have two sisters. My older sister Roxana is a direct mail consultant in Atlanta. My younger sister Tania is a web analyst for HomeAway in Austin, TX.

I grew up in Miami. After high school, I studied Accounting at University of Miami and Georgetown University in Washington D.C.. I switched majors to elementary education and received my Bachelor's Degree in elementary education from Florida International University. I graduated cum laude with an area of concentration in mathematics. I completed my graduate degree with Jones International University where I graduated summa cum laude with a Masters in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

After graduating from college, I moved back to the Washington D.C. area to teach in the Montgomery County Public School System in Silver Spring, MD. I taught five years at Oakland Terrace Elementary School. Next, I moved back to Miami and taught at Gulliver Academy for four years. I moved to Sacramento in June 2005 and worked as an SRA Open Court Reading consultant and co-founded SacramEducate, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational enrichment to children from widely varying school systems and families. I taught 9 years at St. Hope Public School PS7, Courtyard Private School, and Westlake Charter School. This is my fourth year with City Schools of Decatur. I am excited to teach a wonderful fifth grade class.
