SEE Equity

  • Please Note: SEE Equity sessions have concluded for this time period.

    SEE Equity lessons 4-9 will begin in spring 2021. Each class meeting will follow a typical sequence. 


    SEE Equity is an asynchronous content aligned instruction with the six-week synchronous curriculum. To learn more, you can view this document. As part of this new content, students in grades 6-12 will have an opportunity to watch the film Race: the Power of an Illusion, a three-hour series that explores the concept of race from a scientific, historical, and sociological perspective. This series will serve as a tool to better prepare students for facilitated, synchronous discussions related to race, privilege, policy, and justice. 

    Each week, students will view a one-hour episode of the three-part series while working through an active learning guide developed by our Equity and Student Support department. Students will be able to access the film as well as the learning guide, through a link in their Advisement Google classroom. In support of this asynchronous content, district Courageous Conversation About Race (CCAR) Affiliates will provide virtual office hours each week to answer any questions students may have about the content, topics, or issues discussed in the film.

    As students engage with Race: The Power of an Illusion, their Advisement teachers will engage in professional learning with Dr. Watson to develop the skills to facilitate the second part of the SEE Equity curriculum and provide a safer, more intimate environment for student conversations about race. Once their training is complete, the original six-week curriculum discussed during the Wellness Wednesday town halls will instead be guided by advisement teachers and incorporated into student advisement schedules later this school year. As they disseminate content, advisement teachers will have the opportunity to consult with and be supported by our District CCAR Affiliates, who have had over 50 hours of training and extensive experience working with race-related content.

    SEE Equity classes will be disseminated through the student's Advisement. Classes will be Async​ronous​
     
    We ask that students engage with this film over the next three Wellness Wednesdays. Each section of the film will have its own set of pre- and post-work. Engaging in this work will help students to think more deeply about the information presented and how that information manifests in their life. Doing the pre-work, watching the film, then, doing the post-work, is an excellent activity for families to do together. 
     
    Students must submit completed pre- and post-work for each session to receive credit for attending the session.

SEE Learning

  • A key component of Wellness Wednesday is SEE (Social Emotional Ethical ) Learning. The K-12 SEE Learning program was designed to foster social, emotional, and ethical intelligence for students and staff. The key components of the program include attention training, compassion and ethical development, systems thinking, resilience, and trauma-informed practice. These skills will be instrumental in helping our community navigate returning to school after COVID-19 and the local and national racial injustice we are currently experiencing. Members of the Equity and Student Support and Curriculum and Instruction departments, including counselors, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and behavior specialists, will be implementing the Social Emotional Ethical Learning program on Wellness Wednesday.  Each student K-12 will attend a live virtual session with their homeroom or advisement class. Wellness Wednesday

  • About Wellness Wednesday

    Our district is focused on supporting the development of the whole child. Wellness Wednesday is a dedicated time each week to focus on the well-being of our students, staff, and parents. Logo Wellness Wednesday provides a mid-week break from the demands of learning in the virtual environment. It allows families and students to have an opportunity to engage in structured and self-directed activities with a focus on improving overall wellness.

    The National Institute of Wellness defines wellness as an active process through which people become aware of and make choices that promote a more successful existence. CSD is committed to supporting the holistic development and health of our students and staff. The Equity and Student Support department has curated a variety of activities, interventions, and sessions designed to support wellness for students, staff, and parents. The dimensions of wellness include social, emotional, physical, spiritual, occupational (school), and intellectual. Wellness Wednesday will be focused on social, emotional, and physical wellness

    We frame our approach to wellness through an equity lens. Consequently, our programs, initiatives, and professional learning opportunities were designed to celebrate and be inclusive of diversity based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and other cultural characteristics.

    Core components of Wellness Wednesday include SEE Learning and SEE Equity. All students, in grades K-12, will participate in SEE Learning lessons weekly.  All students in grades 6 -12 will participate in SEE Equity lessons, the anti-racism curriculum developed for secondary students. SEE Learning sessions will be offered synchronously at set times each week. SEE Equity sessions will be offered asynchronously during virtual learning and will be incorporated into advisement classes when we return to in-person learning.

    A range of other opportunities will be offered by the Equity & Student Support department tailored for students, parents, and staff. These may be synchronous or asynchronous. Local schools may also offer Wellness Wednesday activities. Families will have the flexibility to select from a menu of choice offerings or use the unscheduled time for more practice on academic assignments or enrichment activities.
