Safe Routes to School
Westchester Elementary is a partner in the Safe Routes to School program.
SRTS is a national program that was created to encourage more children to walk, bike, or ride their scooters to school. Decatur’s own Active Living
department publishes recommended safe walking routes on an annual basis, which can be found here and posted near the front office of the school:
Speaking of safety, the Westchester community is fortunate to have 3 dedicated crosswalks along Scott Boulevard, all of which are staffed mornings and afternoons with a
dedicated team of crossing guards at Coventry Rd,Clairmont Rd, and directly in front of the school.Tip: An option that may be unknown to incoming Westchester families is utilizing Hidden Cove Park to access the recess/activity field and rear
school entrance. This is a great way for students north of Scott to avoid the busy corridor in front of the school, plus it’s a great way to enjoy a few minutes of nature while
walking alongside beautiful Westchester Creek! Some parents even choose to park on the street nearby and take the trail the rest of the way!
