Instruction
Career, Technical and Agriculture Education

Career, Technical and Agriculture Education (CTAE) prepares both youth and adults for a wide range of careers. These careers may require varying levels of education – from high school and postsecondary certificates to two- and four-year college degrees. CTAE is offered at Decatur High School (DHS) and Renfroe Middle School. DHS students also have the opportunity to participate in Joint and Dual Enrollment at DeKalb Technical College. The CTAE Department currently serves 517 of the 744 students (69%) enrolled at DHS. There are 280 students that are taking two or more CTAE courses this school year.

CTAE provides students:

  • Academic subject matter taught with relevance to the real world
  • Employability skills, from job-related skills to workplace ethics
  • Career pathways that link secondary and postsecondary education
  • Second-chance education and training
  • Education for additional training and degrees, especially related to workplace training, skills upgrades and career advancement.

According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), most high school students take at least one career and technical education course, and one in four students take three or more courses in a single program area. One-third of college students are involved in career and technical programs, and as many as 40 million adults engage in short-term postsecondary occupational training.
